Chainmaille is the earliest form of metal armour and is thought to have been created by the ancient Celts some time before the 5th century. The name mail comes from the French word "maille" which is derived from the Latin "macula" meaning "mesh of a net". Originaly used for armour, the technique itself involved linking iron or steel rings together into a weave. The ends were then either pressed together, welded or riveted. Each piece of mail was specially fitted for whichever part of the body it was intended to protect. The final piece was so strong, it would protect the wearer in battle from the sharp point of an arrow or even a sword.
